In the spring of 2010, Dean's Landscaping & Excavating was selected as the site work contractor for the new Fremont High School in Fremont, MI. The new site presented many challenges including extensive wetlands and an all clay soil composition. During the summer of 2010, Dean's crew completed almost 90% of the site work including: Balancing of approximately 100,000 cubic yards of dirt, installation of 3,500 feet of sanitary force main, 5,500 feet of water main, 9,000 feet of storm sewer, installation of 30,000 yards of sand sub-base and 17,000 cubic yards of aggregate base.

Though Dean's Landscaping & Excavating is not based in Newaygo County, many of our employees are. Through payroll to our employees, use of local subcontractors and materials from local suppliers, Dean's was able to put $466,ooo.oo back into the Newaygo County economy.

The Forest Hills School district

Forest Hills Public Schools: Over the years, Dean's has completed numerous projects for the Forest Hills School district. With a recent bond issue, the district was able to update many of their school sites. Dean's completed everything from total parking lot / drive reconstruction including storm, sanitary and water to foundations for additions and new playfields. In a two summer period, work was completed at Orchard View, Thornapple, Collins, Ada Vista, Ada Elementary’s, Northern Middle School and Northern High School. New playfields including track reconstruction were completed at Northern High and Central High. Central High School presented a unique challenge given the four month construction window for complete reconstruction of the site. The project was able to be completed ahead of the original schedule with minimal delays.

Montague Schools new bus garage

Montague New Operations Center: Dean's was able to help when Montague Schools was in need of a new bus garage. The site was a new site witch needed sewer and water ran to the location. Work for Dean’s also included balancing the site, digging and backfilling footings and construction of parking lots. Muskegon County’s road adjacent to the project was reconstructed by Dean’s to handle the increase in traffic. Dean’s was able to offer recycled concrete as an alternate to natural aggregate to help maintain a green build.

Completing eight miles of the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail

White Pine Trail: The Fred Meijer White Pine Trail runs from Comstock Park to Cadillac and follows the route of an old railroad bed. Dean's had the pleasure of completing eight miles of the trail reconstruction, starting at Russell Road in Cedar Springs and going north where the pavement currently ends in Sand Lake at Pine Street. The project included two wood beam bridges, numerous road crossings, and final paving of the entire eight mile section. The trail is used by walkers, bike riders, and snowmobile’s in the winter.

Upgrades to the Big Rapids Wastewater Treatment Facility

Big Rapids Wastewater Treatment Facility: Dean's was able to help with some much needed upgrades to the Big Rapids Wastewater Treatment Facility. Confined work spaces and unknown existing utilities dominated the project. The plant also had to remain working throughout the duration of the project, presenting many unique challenges.

New water treatment facility for Cedar Springs Wastewater

Cedar Springs Wastewater and Lagoon mitigation: Dean's Landscaping & Excavating, Inc. was able to work on and complete work on both the new water treatment facility and mitigation of their existing lagoon system. The new plant consisted of extending the force main to the new site, running onsite utilities, and dig/backfill of holding tanks. Lagoon mitigation consisted of leveling and grading of existing berms, abandoning piping and restoration of the entire site.

Reconstruction of Northland between 12 and 13 mile.

Northland Drive, from 12 Mile to 13 Mile: Old 131 is a main thoroughfare for many commuters in Northern Kent County. Working as the general contractor Dean’s completed the reconstruction of Northland between 12 and 13 mile. The complete reconstruction included expanding the old two lane road to five lanes, including drainage upgrades and curb and gutter.

Rockford Main St.: Dean's worked as the General Contractor to complete one mile of street reconstruction in Rockford, MI. The reconstruction included storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and watermain for the entire length of the project. Due to the residential setting, many homeowners had special needs which we needed to meet.

Reconstruction of four miles of M-44 in Belding, Michigan

Belding, M-44: Reconstruction of four miles of M-44 in Belding presented a unique challenge. Traffic had to be maintained in one direction at all times while keeping to the demanding schedule. The reconstruction included storm sewer, utility upgrades and curb gutter the entire length of the project. Dean's worked as the General Contractor, overseeing paving, concrete, and electrical subcontractors.

Projects for the Ice Mountain water facility

Ice Mountain, Stanwood: Dean's Landscaping & Excavating, Inc. has completed numerous projects for the Ice Mountain water facility in Stanwood, Michigan. Work at the plant has ranged from a 300,000 sft building addition prep, extension of fire protection, parking lot reconstruction and mitigation of wetlands.

The Lowe’s project in Big Rapids

Lowe’s, Big Rapids: The Lowe’s project in Big Rapids did not start as planned. Record rain in the spring, coupled with a clay site, made for considerable delays. Once the site dried in early July (after needing much soil stabilization), Dean's crews worked 14+ hours, 6 days a week to complete the job on schedule. The project was a new building consisting of some 20+ cuts, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main, and 21AA building and parking lot base. Due to the loss of some wetlands on the project, Dean's also completed wetland mitigation in cooperation with the DEQ on a nearby farm.

Meijer, Inc. comes back to the Cedar Springs area.

Meijer, Solon Twp.: When Meijer, Inc. was ready to move a store back to the Cedar Springs area, Dean's was there to help. Dean's completed all three site work packages which included: Complete earth balancing and seeding of the site. Storm sewer main and laterals, water main, and sanitary main with laterals. Parking lot and drive construction including widening of M-46 to 5 lanes in cooperation with MDOT. Dean’s offered an alternate of recycled concrete in lieu of natural aggregate on the drive and parking area’s helping toward the builders “green” designation.
